The Bard said that all the world is a stage... we are merely actors, players and portrayers... and as such, we all read our lines and have our exits and our entrances... some triumphant, some not... sometimes the audiences applauds, sometimes the audience boos... but whatever the case, the show must always go on!
I am not really afraid of the spotlight... when it's my turn to perform, I'll perform the best way I know how... I'm not the greatest performer in history... and I don't have a lot of range... but I've gotten kudos every so often.. However, what I really prefer to work behind the scenes... as a playwright, producer or director. My shows are great shows... the underdog, and not the hero, saves the day... the ending is always unforseen and unexpected... deux ex machinas round every corner... great soundtrack... great special fx... make 'em laugh... make 'em cry... make 'em dance in the aisles...
I'm also the face in the crowd... Now and then, I get tempations to take over a show and fix it... I hate it when good shows go to the dogs... but I can only run the shows I get paid to run... Off Broadway is commendable once in a while, but it can also choke you to death if you got a long run... so very often I intentionally choose to remain in the wings, even when I get all the cues.
The show must go on... there will always be actors who will outact you... or underact you... but no actor is irreplaceable... and no show can play forever... not even cats... and the funny thing is that performance after performance all the cities look exactly the same... history is not supposed to repeat itself... but it does... over and over again... it's scary... and maybe a bit flattering... when you see your show being performed by another troupe... I guess the road goes on forever... and if it does, thank god for rest areas.
